Engagement rings in Switzerland: prices, choice, timing

How much does an engagement ring cost in Switzerland?

Many engagement rings cost between a few hundred francs and around CHF 2,000, with an average of CHF 1,500 to 2,000. For a well-made ring with a real diamond, you will often pay CHF 2,000 to 3,500, and larger stones cost considerably more. Many vendors give the price on request, as it depends mainly on the stone.

The rule of three months' salary comes from advertising. What matters is what suits you and your budget.

Which stone is right?

  • Diamond: the classic. Cut, carat, colour and clarity determine the price.
  • Lab-grown diamond: chemically a diamond, but grown in a laboratory and usually cheaper.
  • Moissanite: sparkles in a similar way and costs considerably less.
  • Sapphire and other coloured stones: more personal and often cheaper than a diamond.

What to look out for when buying an engagement ring

  • Style: look at the jewellery your partner wears: gold, silver or rose gold, plain or with a stone.
  • Ring size: you can find it out in secret, for example from a ring they already wear.
  • Certificate: ask for a certificate for a larger diamond.
  • Adjustments: check before buying whether the ring can be altered or exchanged if it does not fit.
  • Wedding ring: should the wedding ring match it later? Some workshops make both to go together.
